Tickle Cove is located on the Bonavista Peninsula, a breathtaking area that is a must-stop for visitors traveling to Newfoundland. Our Peninsula is filled with numerous little coastal communities, and of course, the town of Bonavista, which serves as a hub to the area. Unfortunately, there are too many places and attractions within the Peninsula to fully explain on this website, and this page will focus primarily on the other two communities you will pass on route 235-18, Open Hall & Red Cliffe, after branching from the main road when driving to Tickle Cove. There will also be a short blurb about Bonavista, which is home to numerous tourism-oriented businesses and attractions. Please see an interactive map toward the bottom of the page if you would like to explore the area in more depth.
Also located along route 235-18, Open Hall is the first community you will drive through on your way to Tickle Cove once branching from the main road. Beautiful in its own right, Open Hall is another picturesque community that has seen some new development over the past few years. When passing through, make sure to check out the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. This church, built in 1908 and now designated as a heritage structure, is a meticulously crafted and magnificent building that will certainly capture your attention.Â
Red Cliffe is the second community you will pass when traveling on route 235-18 after branching off route 235. Red Cliffe is also rich in history and is home to the legendary John Quinton Ltd. premises. The Quinton family, which is still present in the community, operated one of the most successful and longstanding fish buying operations on the Bonavista Peninsula. The premises has also been designated a heritage site and pictures of it have been featured in several tourism advertisements. While driving through the community, you will also see some beautiful murals, and St. Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church.
Bonavista is a historic, and scenic town that is famously known as the landing spot of John Cabot when he discovered Newfoundland in 1497. Bonavista is a hub to the area with roughly 3,500 residents, and is home to several tourism-oriented businesses such as restaurants, cafes, historic sites, boat tours, and much more.
